Best Time for Safari in Tanzania

Northern Circuit Parks – Year-Round Safari Highlights

The Northern Circuit Parks—including Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Manyara, Tarangire, Arusha, and Kilimanjaro—offer some of the most exhilarating safaris in Tanzania. These parks can be visited year-round, though they get busiest during peak seasons. The Great Migration is the main highlight, with wildebeest and zebra calving in Ndutu (December–February) and dramatic river crossings at the Mara River (July–October). From March to June, the herds move through central and western Serengeti before heading north, offering superb game-viewing opportunities.

Predators and herbivores are especially easy to spot in the dry season (June–October), when water sources shrink and vegetation thins out. Birdwatchers will love Lake Manyara and Tarangire between November–May, though canoeing on the Momella Lakes is less appealing during heavy rains.

Climbing Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru

The clearest views of Mount Kilimanjaro come in January–February and July–October. These are also the most popular months for trekking, particularly during full moon climbs. For acclimatization, many travelers hike Mount Meru first, before attempting Kilimanjaro. Expect humid heat with short showers in January–February, or drier but colder conditions from July to September.

Southern Circuit Parks – Remote and Authentic

For a quieter safari, head south to Selous, Ruaha, and Mikumi. Wildlife viewing is best in the dry season (June–October), when animals gather at waterholes and rivers. Many lodges close from mid-March to May during the long rains. While less crowded, these parks reward visitors with pristine wilderness, walking safaris, and boating excursions.

Western Circuit Parks – Chimpanzee Treks & Lake Adventures

In western Tanzania, the Mahale and Gombe Mountains are famous for chimpanzee trekking. The best time to visit is the dry season, June–September, when trails are accessible and chimps are easier to track. Combine your trek with time on Lake Tanganyika’s beaches or fishing around Rubondo Island in Lake Victoria.

Other Hidden Gems & Coastal Escapes

  • Katavi is spectacular in August–October, when hippos and crocodiles fight for shrinking mud pools.

  • Kitulo Plateau (the “Garden of God”) bursts with wildflowers between December–May.

  • Saadani offers a unique blend of beach and bush, best from January–February and June–August.

  • Mkomazi shines for mammals in July–August, while birdlife peaks March–June.

Finally, Tanzania’s east coast and islands—including Zanzibar, Mafia, Pemba, and Kilwa—offer year-round tropical escapes. Expect warm, humid weather with short rains in November–December and long rains March–June. Beyond beaches, the coast is rich in history, culture, and festivals such as Sauti za Busara (February) and the Zanzibar Film Festival (June).
