The Birdwatcher’s Paradise

Lake Manyara National Park

About Lake Manyara

Lake Manyara National Park, whose name comes from the Maasai word “enyara” (referring to the milk-colored, alkali-rich water of the lake), is a hidden gem of Tanzania’s northern safari circuit. Established in 1960, the park spans approximately 330 sq. km, with two-thirds covered by its shimmering soda lake. Nestled along the base of the dramatic Great Rift Valley escarpment, Lake Manyara offers one of the most diverse habitats in Africa, making it a compact yet vibrant safari destination.

The park’s landscapes include alkaline waters, dense groundwater forests, open savannah, and acacia woodlands, all bordered by steep Rift Valley walls. This breathtaking setting supports an abundance of wildlife, ranging from elephants and giraffes to primates and countless bird species. Of particular fame are the tree-climbing lions, a rare behavior that sets Lake Manyara apart.

Although not as wildlife-dense as Serengeti or Ngorongoro, the park offers incredible biodiversity, with elephants, wildebeest, zebras, giraffes, buffaloes, and an impressive array of antelope. Flamingos and other waterbirds adorn the lake’s shallow waters, creating a pink-and-white spectacle visible from afar.

Activities in Lake Manyara

Game Drives

Set out on thrilling morning or evening drives, when wildlife is most active and the light is perfect for photography. Traverse diverse habitats, from lush groundwater forests to the vast lakeshore, with chances to spot elephants, giraffes, zebras, and the park’s famous tree-climbing lions. For those seeking a deeper immersion, full-day game drives provide the opportunity to explore the park at a relaxed pace with picnic stops in scenic spots.

Experience the wilderness from a fresh perspective on guided walking safaris accompanied by armed rangers. These walks allow you to connect with nature up close—learning about tracks, plants, and the smaller creatures often missed from a vehicle—while feeling the thrill of being on foot in big game territory.

Glide silently across the alkaline waters of Lake Manyara (when water levels allow). This peaceful activity offers a rare vantage point to observe hippos wallowing, flamingos wading gracefully, and a dazzling array of waterbirds along the shores, with the dramatic Rift Valley escarpment mirrored in the water’s surface.

Step into the world of the Maasai, one of Africa’s most iconic tribes. Visits to a traditional manyatta (homestead) offer insights into their customs, dances, beadwork, and daily life, while guided community experiences reveal how the Maasai coexist with wildlife and preserve their heritage in the modern age.

As the sun sets, a different world awakens. Embark on a night safari to search for elusive nocturnal species, including genets, civets, porcupines, bush babies, and possibly even lions or leopards beginning their nightly hunts. This activity offers a completely different safari experience, full of anticipation and discovery.

With more than 400 recorded species, Lake Manyara is a paradise for bird lovers. The lake is famed for its flocks of flamingos, while other highlights include pelicans, storks, cormorants, and raptors such as fish eagles. Migratory species arrive from November to April, making this the prime birding season for enthusiasts eager to expand their checklists.
