Nicknamed the “Coca-Cola Route,” Marangu is a popular choice for those who prefer sleeping in huts instead of tents. Many think it’s easier, but the short duration gives little time to adjust to the altitude — which is why it has the lowest summit success rate. Choosing the 6-day option instead of 5 greatly improves your chances.
Landscape
Starting on the southeast side of Kilimanjaro, the route takes you from lush rainforest into open moorlands, and then into a rugged, otherworldly landscape. The trail is fairly gentle until the final push to the summit, which is steep and challenging. The same path is used for both the ascent and descent, so the scenery is less varied than on other routes.
Highlights
Comfortable hut accommodation (no camping)
Drinks available at some huts
Gentler start before the tough summit day
Difficulty Level
Relatively easy at first, but tough on summit day; lowest overall success rate.
Distance
About 70 km, usually completed in 5–6 days.
