The Northern Circuit is the longest route on Mount Kilimanjaro and has the highest success rate. Its length allows plenty of time to adjust to the altitude, with a “climb high, sleep low” approach that helps your body acclimatise. The first two days follow the Lemosho Route before heading toward Lava Tower, then circling the quiet northern slopes of the mountain at about 4,000 meters. The trail eventually joins the Rongai Route to reach the summit at Uhuru Peak. The descent follows the busy Mweka Route, a sharp contrast to the peaceful start of the journey.
Landscape
The first two days take you through lush rainforest and open moorlands before moving onto the wide, open slopes at high altitude.
Highlights
Peace and solitude for most of the trek, along with breathtaking views — especially from the northern side of the mountain.
Difficulty Level
Fairly easy but long, with a 95% success rate.
Distance
88 km over 8 to 9 days.
