This is the only route that starts on the northern side of Mount Kilimanjaro. Because it is drier than other routes, it is a good choice during the rainy season. It may not be as scenic as some other trails, but the path is gentle and the camps are well spaced, giving climbers plenty of time to adjust to the altitude. Since fewer people take this route, it feels more peaceful and natural, and you might even spot some wildlife. From the third day, the trail is mostly gentle but rocky. On the day before the summit, the walk is short, giving you time to rest before starting the midnight climb to the top. The way down follows the Marangu Route to the southeast, which usually takes one or two days.
Landscape
The trek begins in farmland, then moves into lush rainforest. After that, you pass through woodland, open moorland, and finally the strange, barren landscape known as the “Saddle.” The descent through the Marangu Route takes you back through moors and rainforest after leaving the rocky slopes. A highlight for many is camping in the beautiful shadow of Mawenzi Peak — an unforgettable sight, second only to reaching the summit.
Difficulty Level
Fairly easy, with about an 85% success rate.
Distance
74 km over 6 to 7 days.
