The Umbwe Route is one of the steepest and most challenging ways up Mount Kilimanjaro. It reaches Barranco Camp in just two days instead of the usual three or four, which means there is very little time to adjust to the high altitude. The trail is steep, narrow, and often exposed — not suitable for anyone afraid of heights. From Barranco Camp, the route joins the Machame Route all the way to the summit. This climb is best for very experienced trekkers and should be done over the full 7 days for safety.
Landscape
The first two days take you deep through lush rainforest before climbing onto the rocky slopes of Kilimanjaro.
Highlights
Quiet, remote, and wild. Standing on Uhuru Peak after completing this demanding climb is a reward that only the most skilled and determined trekkers achieve.
Difficulty Level
Very difficult — for experienced climbers only. Success rate is around 70%.
Distance
48 km over 5 to 7 days.
